Freiburg (ALU-FR)

Universitaet Freiburg

Institut für Makromolekulare ChemieThe group is headed by Professor Dr H Finkelmann and is situated in the Institut für Makromolekulare Chemie (IMC) der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Polymer Science has become a fully integrated part of education in the Faculty of Chemistry and currently about 80 students are doing their PhD thesis in the institute. The interdisciplinary activities on Polymer Science in Freiburg range from organic synthesis to theoretical physics and the IMC is an internationall recognized centre of Polymer Science. In 1984 H. Finkelmann became one of the two directors of the IMC. The research topic of his group is focused on “Macromolecules in the Liquid Crystalline State of Order”. A. Hoffmann is responsible for the solid state NMR spectroscopy. The group has expertise in the synthesis and analysis of the physical properties of liquid crystalline polymers and elastomers. The laboratories are fully equipped for the synthesis and physical characterisation (X-ray, solid-state NMR, polymer characterisation) of liquid crystalline polymers and polymer networks.

Facilities: In the IMC all facilities are available for the synthesis and characterization of low molar mass and polymeric liquid crystals that are relevant for the project.

Role in the project: Synthesis of new biaxial nematic polymers and polymer networks, including from monomeric systems synthesized by the other members of the project. With detailed NMR studies phase biaxiality will be analyzed and correlated with optical studies.
