 The demonstrator displays

Two types of demonstrator displays were engineered, one at Trinity College Dublin using an LC material from Halle in a biaxial in-plane switching arrangement, and one at the University of Oxford, using LC materials from Halle and Hull, in a biaxial enhanced helical flexo-electro-optic arrangement. Each showed video rate field sequential colour operation, which is not possible with current commercial uniaxial based LCD technology.
The biaxial in-plane switching display: In this, two sets of electrodes were used to lead to high speed switching. The electrode arrangement, and resulting colour swatches for the green, blue and red states are shown below.
 
The biaxial enhanced helical flexo-electro-optic display: For this device a three pixel demonstrator was engineered. Images from a video sequence of the switching operation of the device are shown below.
